Invisalign

The invisible way to straighten your teeth
 Perfect smiles from £2900

is a cutting edge technology designed by an ex orthodontic patient in the USA, who thought that treatment could be done more aesthetically and comfortably than his fixed brace treatment!

It has been going since 1999, but we at Ortho@62 have been one of the leading non franchised practices in Manchester offering Invisalign® since 2005 .

How it works

Following a consultation to assess whether Invisalign® is appropriate for your case, we then book a 45 minute appointment. At this appointment we will take very accurate impressions of your teeth, a full jaw x-ray (orthopantomograph) and a series of clinical photos of your teeth and face.

These are then sent by post and e-mail to Invisalign® in California, where they are scanned into a CAD computer program and the data analysed. Invisalign®. send back via the internet, their proposal for treatment, based on our diagnosis and treatment plan. If we are not happy it can go back 2-3 times until we are happy, and then we go ahead.

For the diagnostic treatment and creating of a suitable treatment plan , including consultation and discussion with the patient , a part payment of £400 is due at the time of impressions. This is to cover the costs incurred by us from Invisalign®

From the models and digital information, the whole treatment in the form of a series of resilient aligners will be produced in one go. Since the aligners need to be changed every 2 weeks, there could be up to 40 aligners for each jaw.

The aligners are made of a clear plastic compound, 0.75mm thick and fit accurately onto your teeth, but avoid the gum. Each aligner will move 1–3 teeth by up to 0.25mm every 2 weeks, hence they need to be worn 22/7 except when eating and cleaning your teeth. Because they are see-through, no one - well almost no one - will see that you are wearing them. Also because they are removable and free of the gum, you do not get the gum inflammations or food trapping associated with fixed braces. From a periodontal (gum) point of view, this could not be better.

In crowded arches, we may need to take a tooth out or we may be able to create the space with interdental polishing (IDP). This is a technique used extensively in the USA and Germany, where by, polishing the contacts between the teeth we can gain up to 0.5mm per interdental space. This, combined with a mild degree of dental arch widening and aligning the teeth, can in many cases negate the removal of your own teeth. We can only tell this, following the CAD diagnosis and/or treatment plan.

The only downside is that your teeth must be decay free during the treatment. As all the aligners are produced at the beginning of treatment and fit the teeth accurately, any alterations to your teeth due to a filling being replaced or a hole repaired will mean the aligner will not fit and the treatment will not be effective.

In emergencies, a new set of impressions can be taken and new aligners made for the altered mouth. There may be a charge for the new diagnostic models and treatment plan.

Treatment time

Treatment time is usually 12 – 15 months – no change on fixed braces, but in easier cases it could be as little as 8 months.

Retention

When the teeth have reached their final position, they need to be retained – held in that position – until the bone matrix around the roots has stabilised. This takes at least 3 months. Further, the teeth need to have long term retention to avoid relapse. Retention is long term , a minimum of 2 years , reducing after the first 6 months. The longer the retention the better the result !

Retention can be of 2 types –

1. a fixed retainer, usually a multistrand wire, spot glued to the inside of the front teeth in upper and/or lower jaw. In the last 6 years 98% of our patients have taken this option .
2. a removable retainer – similar to your aligner, but made of a stronger and more resilient clear plastic. This must be worn at night to ensure stability of your teeth. In both cases the fee for retainers includes the retainer and 6 months follow-up treatment.

Oral Health and Hygiene

Routine  check ups and oral hygiene and cleaning should be continued with your dentist .

We can also offer you a service whereby every 3 months your teeth are thoroughly scaled and Airflow® cleaned to the standard requried for Invisalign® therapy . This keeps your mouth healthy and reduces the risk of decay during the treatment.

As said previously, it is imperative that your teeth are in a healthy state at the beginning of treatment, and we feel you will not require routine dentistry during the treatment time. We will advise you as to our opinion and then you need to consult your own dentist, to get the treatment completed before we take the initial impressions.

Tooth Whitening

We can combine this with your Invisalign® therapy. At the beginning of treatment we will start the tooth whitening so that at the end your smile is not only great, your teeth are sparkling bright!
